Modeled largely after the U.S.-based program “Reading
is Fundamental,” Family Island Book Initiative provides
books for children to explore and keep. It encourages
children to build personal libraries and families to
participate in reading development.
Volunteers are guest readers who go into local schools
read to children and distribute to each child a book of
their own. The program is designed to engage teachers in
the selection of books and also to reach into communities
and settlements via church groups and local medical clinics.
Books donated through the program are purchased directly
by the foundation or donated to the foundation by other
literacy non-profits and individuals. Selections are vetted
by reading specialists and teachers. When possible Family
Island Book Initiative makes efforts to utilize and
encourage local authors, publishers, and distributors.
